BPCC’s Fiber Optics program sees remarkable growth, community support

Bossier Parish Community College (BPCC) is proud to announce the significant growth of its Fiber Optics program, marking a pivotal step in bridging the gap between education, industry needs, and community development. This expansion is a testament to BPCC’s ongoing commitment to advancing educational opportunities while fulfilling the rising demand for skilled workers in the local and regional workforce.

Quentin Calhoun, Dean of Business Information and Technology, expressed enthusiasm for the program's expansion and the positive impact on the community.

“At BPCC, our mission is to put ‘community’ in community college. Our Fiber Optics program exemplifies this mission by partnering with key organizations, such as BPCC’s College Transition Programs, the Fuller Center, Goodwill Industries, and Caddo Parish Corrections. These partnerships are vital as we work together to address the needs of our industry partners and provide a robust recruiting pool of quality applicants ready for hire.”

Last month, the College announced the launch of its Fiber Optics Technician Training Initiative, which provides 15 participants enrolled in BPCC’s College Transition Program with three free courses, a free certification exam, and a $200 monthly stipend. The program prepares students for promising careers with leading companies such as AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon.

The program’s recent growth has attracted significant interest from potential partners who are eager to contribute to its success and sustainability. These collaborative efforts align perfectly with BPCC’s overarching goal of ensuring that local industries have access to a well-trained workforce, prepared to meet the demands of this rapidly evolving field.

"The growth of BPCC’s Fiber Optics program reflects the increasing demand for high-speed connectivity in our community and beyond,” said Alex Boone, Fiber Optics Instructor. “By equipping students with hands-on experience and industry-recognized certifications, we are preparing a new generation of professionals to meet the immediate workforce needs of the rapidly evolving telecommunications industry. The community support has been tremendous, and together, we are building a stronger, more connected future."

One of the most notable highlights of this initiative is the generous donation from AT&T, which will help cover tuition costs for several students. This contribution will make the program more accessible and inclusive, providing opportunities for individuals who may otherwise face financial barriers.

“We are immensely grateful to AT&T for their support,” added Calhoun. “Their contribution is instrumental in helping us provide educational opportunities for individuals who might not otherwise have had access to them.”
