Medical Office Specialist
The Medical Office Specialist program accepts students at Bossier Parish Community College in the Fall semester. Prerequisite classes must be taken before being accepted into the MOS program unless approved by Program Director.
The BPCC Medical Office Specialist program offers both a Technical Diploma in Medical Coding and Billing & Reimbursement. Students interested in a Technical Diploma in Coding will need to complete 49 credit hours. A Technical Diploma in Billing and Reimbursement requires 49 credit hours. For students wanting to complete a Technical Diploma in Medical Coding and Billing & Reimbursement are able to do so simultaneously only needing to complete an additional 6 credit hours.

Career Description
The Medical Office Specialist Program provides students with the skill and knowledge necessary to do entry level work in a medical office, insurance company, lab & billing company.
College-ready students can complete the Technical Diploma as a Medical Office Specialist in four semesters. The Medical Coder codes outpatient charts for a Provider office, check out patient, verify insurance, bill out claims, and various clerical duties.
The Medical Biller will work denied claims, bill claims out, add modifiers, explain to patient their policy regarding deductible, coinsurance, verify insurance, work with the coder on resolving issues and various other clerical duties.

Employment of health information technicians is projected to grow 13 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. The demand for health services is expected to increase as the population ages. Additional records, coupled with widespread use of electronic health records (EHRs) by all types of healthcare providers, will lead to an increased need for technicians to organize and manage the associated information in all areas of the healthcare industry.
