BPCC HOSTS ARTWORK EXHIBITS ON CAMPUS

Reception for Artist Ellen Sofer set for Wed, October 10 at 11:30am

Bossier Parish Community College has two art exhibits currently on display on the BPCC campus. In the Donna Service Gallery (Building A), our very own Liberal Arts instructor Lily Thompson’s art exhibit “Biological Indoctrination” is on display now through October 10, and in the Learning Commons/Library (Building A), artist Ellen Soffer’s exhibit, “Some Are Poems,” is on display now through January 11, 2019.

Thompson has been a Fine Arts instructor at BPCC for 3 years. She attended Centenary College and received a degree in both Sociology and Fine Art, and has a master’s degree in Fine Art from Northwestern State University.

Ellen Soffer is a professional artist, whose paintings are in collections, and have been exhibited, throughout the country. What is unique about the “Some Are Poems” exhibit at the BPCC Learning Commons is that it features 20 of her most current paintings.

“I have been enamored with Soffer’s paintings for more than twenty years,” says BPCC art instructor Kelly McDade. “Her paintings invite viewers past the surface and into her exploration of color and color relationships. There is a sense of pure delight when seeing her works together and it is clear that as she is painting in her studio she is constantly thinking of how one relates to another. Soffer is a smart painter, one filled with equal parts measured science and inspired, spontaneous art.”

Soffer’s work will be celebrated during a reception this Wednesday, October 10, between 11:30 AM and 1 PM in Building A on the BPCC Campus. Her work will be on display through January 11. Additional information about the artist can be found at www.EllenSoffer.com.

The exhibition of art by Lily Thompson will be closing in the Donna Service Gallery after the reception on October 11.

The Donna Service Gallery at Bossier Parish Community College is named in honor of Service, a professional artist and former art instructor at the College. The gallery displays up to six exhibitions, annually, focusing on works by both professional artists and students. While at BPCC, Ms. Service encouraged her students to interact with the broader art scene in Shreveport-Bossier by involving them in projects throughout the region. Her legacy continues with the activities of the gallery, and while she is no longer with us, she is widely remembered as an inspiration to her colleagues and students, alike.
