Surgical Technology
Technical Diploma

The Surgical Technology program provides training for students to assist the surgeon in the operating room environment.

Learning Outcomes:

Recipients of the Technical Diploma in Surgical Technology will have demonstrated

  1. effective verbal communication with the surgeon and other members of the health care team in the preparation and performance of essential tasks;
  2. utilization of critical thinking and learned skills to anticipate, recognize, assess, and rectify possible surgical complications as appropriate to the role of a surgical technologist;
  3. application of concepts of anatomy, pathophysiology, microbiology, technology, and pharmacology to the role of the surgical technologist;
  4. application of mathematical skills to perform medication calculations and prepare for surgical procedures; and
  5. competence in the performance of skills appropriate to the role of the surgical technologist.

Specific Requirements:

Students pursuing a Technical Diploma in Surgical Technology must first meet College admission requirements. All students who have successfully completed the designated qualifications courses for Surgical Technology with a grade of "C" or above are eligible to apply for clinical classes. Approximately twenty (20) students are selected for each clinical class. Clinical class size is determined by clinical site availability and employment statistics. Selection for the clinical portion of the program is based on the following criteria:

  1. Grade point average (a "C" or above on all qualification courses)
  2. Three academic rating forms (references)

Students selected for the Surgical Technology clinicals will be required to provide all required clinical information (described earlier in this section). Students in clinical programs are required to pay an additional clinical fee (as listed in the BPCC Academic Bulletin) in addition to regular tuition. Clinical students must be available for lecture and clinical training Monday through Friday.

Students must test out of READ 099, into ENGL 101, and into MATH 099 as documented by ACT, placement tests, or course completion prior to beginning clinical classes.
