Associate of Applied Science in Care and Development of Young Children (CDYC)

Bossier Parish Community College is approved to offer the Associate of Applied Science in Care and Development of Young Children (CDYC) (formerly titled Early Childhood or Early Childhood Education) with the emphasis in the development of infants, toddlers and young children.

Bossier Parish Community College and the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences recognize the need for quality child care in the community. The Care and Development of Young Children (CDYC) Program at Bossier Parish Community College is designed to meet the educational standards set by the State and federal governments for early childhood programs and satisfies the highest level of requirements in the Louisiana Quality Rating System (QRS) for providers of child care.

The mission is to provide quality, research-based course work, specifically designed for roles in homes, residential, or institution-based child-care services and Head Start programs. Candidates will develop practical, hands-on techniques and methods to apply to teaching practices with young children

Program Review:

Students in the CDYC program must:

  • have an up-to-date health record;
  • complete a sex offender and FBI criminal history background check;
  • complete a Portfolio and resource file;
  • create a “Reflection Journal” to use with young children;
  • complete and document observation hours in an “Observation Log”;
  • complete all coursework with a “C” or better;
  • have a cumulative 2.0 GPA to be eligible to graduate.

General Degree Information:

The graduating student will receive 60 hours of college credit for the required courses, including 27 college credits in CDYC courses. The CDYC program is designed for transfer into four-year programs within departments of Family and Consumer Sciences and/or Human Ecology.

Learning Outcomes:

Recipients of the Associate of Applied Science in CDYC will have demonstrated:

  1. understanding of professional and ethical issues in the field of early childhood;
  2. application of theories related to cognitive, social/emotional, physical, creative, and behavioral early childhood development;
  3. ability to identify and provide care and education for children with different learning styles, developmental levels, and exceptionalities;
  4. awareness of state health and safety regulations in child care environments;
  5. knowledge of NAEYC’s (National Association for the Education of Young Children) standards for Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) in early Childhood Programs; and,
  6. familiarity with the requirements of the Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition.

Additional Requirements for the Associate of Applied Science in the Care and Development of Young Children Degree:
In order to observe in the childcare centers, CDYC students must complete a sexual offender and FBI Criminal History background check.
